George Russell: Mercedes driver 'bamboozled' by pace struggles after fresh title blow in Monaco GP qualifying

George Russell admits he is "bamboozled" by his struggles for pace in his Mercedes after his latest setback saw him qualify sixth for the Monaco Grand Prix while team-mate Kimi Antonelli took pole position.

Russell now faces the real prospect of losing further significant ground to Antonelli at the top of the Drivers' Championship on Sunday in a street race that traditionally features limited overtaking.

He fell 43 points behind the Italian teenager after he retired from the lead of the race in Canada due to a power-unit fault, with Antonelli now chasing a fifth win in succession.

Since impressively winning the season's opening grand prix in Australia, and then triumphing in the sprint at the start of the following weekend's event in China, Russell has suffered from both misfortune and, at times, a surprising lack of pace relative to Antonelli.

The gap between the pair was almost 0.4s in Q3 on Saturday and asked about that lack of pace in qualifying, a perplexed Russell told Your Site F1: "If I knew, I would be able to not be in that position.

"The start of the year was just easy. Every lap I did in practice, qualifying, it was P1 - worst case P2 - every single session. Q1, Q2, Q3.

"Last three races it's just been nowhere. Even Canada was a real fight to get a decent lap and then I just nailed it at the end of both of those [qualifying] sessions [when he took pole] but that was sort of like pulling something special out of the hat and a little bit 'lucky' to do it at the right time.

"But that's just where I am right now. I don't really know."

Despite his flying start to the 2026 campaign, the pre-season title favourite does not believe this year's W17 - the first Mercedes for the sport's new era of chassis and engine rules - suits his driving style as much as their 2025 car, which saw him produce arguably his best season in F1 yet.

"There's definitely some things we've seen that the changes with this year's car, with my natural driving style doesn't suit it as last year's car did," said Russell.

"Kimi and I have had different driving styles. I don't want to go into too much detail but it was clear last year and it's clear this year, but obviously last year it suited me just fine and this year it's suiting him perfectly well. So either I need to adjust to this and I'll do my best to do that, but it still doesn't answer why the start of the year was such a breeze.

"I don't know. A bit bamboozled right now."

After what appeared a tricky start to the weekend in Friday's first practice session, when he trailed Antonelli by an unusually large half-second margin, Russell ended the opening day as the quicker of the two Mercedes' drivers, although the team were well off the leading pace set by Ferrari.

The team managed to make significant improvements to get back in the mix at the front into Saturday but Antonelli was comfortably faster than his more-experienced team-mate in all track sessions throughout the day.

Mercedes boss Toto Wolff said: "[Russell] just never had the confidence in the car.

"Qualifying started on a bad foot, FP3 was still very OK, and once you start to run behind the performance and you lose the confidence, it's super difficult to catch up again.

"I think if there was one session more he would have been there or thereabouts. But he didn't have any grip and Monaco, no grip, means you can't push it."
